American Golden Plover Spotted in Kent

This rare bird has been spotted only four times in the county, the last time was in 1987.

Image of American Golden PloverA grant of £270,000 to Kent Wildlife Trust was awarded in 2005 through our Biodiversity Challenge Fund. This is a four year project to develop and enhance the biodiversity value of this National Coastal Nature Reserve, Sandwich & Pegwell Bay.

The aims of the project are:

  • Increase the native biodiversity through habitat creation
  • Enhance an internationally important site of nature conservation for the benefit of rare species
  • Raise levels of public awareness and involvement in caring for our precious natural environment
  • Encourage more visitors by improving access and providing a quality wildlife and nature conservation experience.

We are delighted that this significant bird has been spotted, only 18 months into the project. More
